Abaca is a strong plant fiber extracted from the leaf sheaths of the Musa textilis plant. Musa textilis is a close relative of the banana plant, though it is grown for fiber rather than fruit.
Handling Notes
- Commonly used to produce pulp for papermaking, this fiber is among the strongest natural fibers by weight
- It creates exceptionally thin and strong paper sheets, making it ideal for layered or sculptural paper work, and is a favorite for conservation and book arts
